Painting the Psalms
A Book Review
I absolutely love art. It has been a passion of mine since I was a young girl. As an author, art simply seems to go along with my list of interests. Reading, writing, blogging… drawing, painting… and of course, writing reviews. So, why not write a review of a book about art?
I have recently been reading a lovely book titled, Painting the Psalms by artist, and author, Cherie Burbach. I unofficially met Cherie a few years ago, online, through the grapevine as it were, via my editor, Lisa Lickel. I began looking at Cherie’s paintings and watching her posts here and there. I must say, her style suits my interests.
Cherie Burbach paints in a way many people may not understand, but many more may thoroughly get it. A “paint-what-you-feel” kind of artist, Cherie uses mixed media to create her beautiful art.
Whether using acrylic paints, watercolors, ink, oil pastels, or even pencils, Cherie mixes all with a variety of other supplies such as paper, lace, and other ephemera to create beautiful, vibrant, works of art. No two paintings are exactly alike, which makes each piece wonderfully unique.
It was a breath of fresh air for me, because one of Cherie’s statements (from an online art course) is, “There’s no right or wrong way to paint. Your painting is just that; it’s yours.” What a freedom statement! Therefore, reading Painting the Psalms gave me a whole new light to God’s Word, through Cherie’s art.
Cherie takes some of her favorite psalms and not only creates a beautiful painting of each one, she also writes how God speaks to her through that particular verse. The paintings are vibrant, colorful, and tells its own special story. In each description of Cherie’s interpretive paintings, she includes that psalm, along with the supplies she used to create that work of art. It’s absolutely beautiful.
Painting the Psalms is a lovely book. It actually reads like a devotional, but with a happy surprise of vibrantly colored artwork that gives a pleasant interpretation of God’s Word. I believe this enchanting book should grace the bookshelves, or coffee table, of every person who loves art, devotions, or reading in general.
Throughout each interpretation of her paintings, you will also discover bits and pieces of Cherie’s personal life-story. I must say, we never know what someone has been through unless we walk a mile in their shoes, so-to-speak. Reading Painting the Psalms gives the reader a glimpse of Cherie’s life and how God has brought her to this point in time, through experiencing her art.

It has been a delightful pleasure reading this book. I highly recommend it. However, let me give one word of warning: Read it s l o w l y. Just one a day, if you can. Savor each piece of artwork and the message God wants to speak to you in each of the Psalms. Let it all sink in. Ponder. Wonder. But most of all… enjoy.
